He
knew shortly after starting there that he really wanted to go back to farming. So in March of 1973, Dale started farming
with his father on the family farm. Nancy was teaching at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, where we were living. We moved to Oxford so both of us had some commute to work. In August 1975 we moved to the Cliff Beckler farm west of Wellman.
We were renting and farming that along with farming his folk's farm. Dale loved farming, raising feeder lambs, fatting
cattle, and doing custom round baling. This was what he was doing at the time of his death. On February 22, 1977, our daughter Amy Lee was born. Dale loved being a father
and enjoyed taking care of her. Dale was killed in a uniloader accident while doing chores on Friday, February
23, 1979.
We had just celebrated Amy's 2nd birthday the day before.
It
has been 28 years since the accident. Because of the accident many people contacted me and have shared things about
Dale. During our lives together, I met many of his classmates from high school, some from attending Hesston together,
others because of living in this area and others from being introduced over the years. This is not easy to write, but I am glad to share a little of our
lives together. A little over two years after Dale’s death, I married Ron Brenneman (IMS grad of '69). Amy
graduated from IMS in 1995, went to Hesston for two years and then to Bethel, graduating with a degree in elementary education in 2000. Thank you from Amy, me and the Roth family for establishing the scholarship in Dale's name. I look forward to
joining you on Sunday morning at IMS.
