The
day after class trip I started working at Kalona Savings Bank and was there off and on until 1980. Paul Hershberger and
I were married on October 11, 1969 while he was in I-W service in Lancaster, Pa so we lived there another year and then moved back
to Kalona. I went back to the bank and he began working at English River Pellets where he still is today. We have two
sons, Mike, 35, and his wife, Shonda, who live in Ankeny, IA with their children, London, almost 4 and Camden, 2. Jason, 32, and his wife, Jenn, live in Littleton, CO with their children,
Lexi, 5 and Gavin, 2.
I continued
working at the bank on a part-time basis after our sons were born until 1980 when I accepted a position in the business
office at IMS basically for the flexibility it offered. I "retired" from IMS in 1992, when our youngest son graduated.
From there I went to Iowa City to be the office manager for my younger brother, Dave, who owned a
screen printing business. After 8 years of helping Dave, he
had the opportunity to sell the business, so I "retired" again, one week before my youngest son was married and several weeks
before my 50th birthday. The next 6 months were the most discontented time of my entire life; my kids were both married
and gone and I didn't have a job and I was real bored with mowing lawn, cleaning house and washing windows. I decided
to get back into banking and went to Hills Bank in Coralville for 5 years. About a year ago a position opened in the Kalona
office of Hills Bank and I decided to come back to Kalona where I will probably stay until I retire for good.
Paul and I have
become fans of Amtrak and take the train to Denver 3 to 4 times a year to visit Jason's family. We love to vacation in a warm
climate and have been going to Mexico during February or March since 1995. We are in good health and have 4 wonderful
grandchildren. Life is good.
